Happy Halloween from Jack & Lily — Spooky Greetings to Share

I can’t stop laughing.

Lily is dressed as a cow for Halloween — and she’s absolutely adorable. When your youngest turns thirteen, this is apparently what happens: you start dressing the family pets for holidays. It’s funny, a little over-the-top, and completely charming.

We tried a few different looks until we found one that suited her calm, good-natured personality. The result is a fluffy Labradoodle who doesn’t mind a costume and seems to enjoy the extra attention. My son took charge of the outfit, and the entire process turned into a small family production: measuring, adjusting, and taking far too many photos.

There’s something about dressing up pets that brings out everyone’s playful side. It’s not just about the costume — it’s about the laughter and memories created in the process. Lily’s cow costume is simple: soft fabric, comfortable straps, and a cute hood that stays put long enough for a few shots. We made sure it was secure but not restrictive, so she could move and sit comfortably.

If you’re thinking of dressing your dog for Halloween, here are a few tips we used that kept Lily calm and happy:

  • Choose lightweight fabrics that won’t irritate the skin.
  • Keep the costume loose enough for movement but snug enough that it won’t slip over the dog’s eyes.
  • Introduce the outfit slowly—let your pet sniff and explore it before trying it on.
  • Use short sessions and offer praise or treats so the experience stays positive.
  • Always prioritize your pet’s comfort and remove the costume at the first sign of stress.

What started as a joke became a memorable moment. My dogs might need counseling from all the attention, and I might need an intervention for enabling this kind of dress-up, but for now we’re enjoying the silliness. The photos are already a hit with friends and family, and Lily’s calm personality made the whole thing effortless.

Costuming a pet can be a lighthearted way to celebrate the season, as long as it’s done thoughtfully. For us, dressing Lily as a cow created a few laughs and plenty of snapshots we’ll cherish. Whether your dog loves costumes or tolerates them for a treat, a gentle approach and a simple outfit can make Halloween fun for everyone.
