Hand Stenciling and Faux Finishes: Decorative Paint Techniques

Last week we discussed neutral and colored walls and I mentioned my fondness for wallpaper. If you want walls, ceilings or furniture that truly stand out, hand-painted designs and textured finishes offer a beautiful, unique result.

In past homes my husband and I have experimented with painted stripes and murals—he even created a Lord of the Rings mural in our son’s nursery. What we’ve always wanted to try is stenciling a room to mimic hand-painted wallpaper.

One of my blog sponsors, Royal Design Studio, offers a wide selection of stunning stencils that can give the effect of elegant wallpaper and layered finishes.

Stenciling and faux finishing are excellent ways to emphasize architectural features—or to create a focal point where none exists.

Stenciling offers many possibilities—from a full, wallpaper-like repeat to small decorative accents. When combined with texture and faux finishing, a flat, uninspired wall can be transformed into one full of character. The design options are practically endless and allow you to create a truly personalized statement.

If you have the skill—or the patience—you can even decorate ceilings with stencils for a dramatic, bespoke look.

As I write this, I’m picturing spots around my own house that could use a little stenciled detail. It’s hard not to start planning a new project instead of packing for an event!
