Garage Studio Ideas and Trends to Try Next Year

One of the things we loved about this house when we were looking in Seattle was its flexibility. Although the main floor is fairly modest at about 1,500 square feet, the basement, attached garage and a generous backyard give us much more usable space and many options to expand and adapt as our needs change.

We have long imagined different ways to use the lower level beyond everyday family life—whether that means growing our business, creating a rental suite, or providing space for extended family. All of those possibilities remain open.

Right now my office and business work area, plus the laundry room, are located downstairs. It’s also where miscellaneous items we don’t yet have a home for tend to accumulate—anyone else’s basement become a catchall? So while we feel settled in many ways, we still have projects to tackle this year.

Depending on how we prioritize space, we’ve even considered converting and organizing the garage—which currently doesn’t house a car—into a dedicated studio for our business.

Our garage when we moved in

I can picture many possibilities for this space. I’ve already started an inspiration file with ideas and layouts to help guide our plans—I’ll share a few of those visuals in this post.

This week I’m preparing an update on the progress we’ve made around the house so far, including before-and-after photos and a look at our goals for the coming year.
