The Design Files
As I mentioned earlier this week, I’ve been moving furniture around and starting to live in rooms arranged more like the vision I have for our home. It’s exciting to see pieces come together, but it’s also a little frustrating to wait until everything is in place to fully realize the look in my head. I’m eager to act — patience is not my strongest trait when it comes to decorating.
Transforming a house into the home you imagine often takes time. Many of you will relate: this can be a years-long process. Now that I can clearly picture how I want the house to feel, I’m encouraged and motivated. A blank house is full of possibilities, but it also presents challenges. Figuring out the right vibe, working within a realistic budget, and progressing at a pace we can manage all require careful thought and adaptation.

Now that many design decisions are in place and the remaining choices are taking shape, the practical work begins: starting projects we can afford now, budgeting for larger updates, setting a sensible order for renovations, and finding the right contractors. Even seemingly small projects can become more complicated than expected; remodeling often feels like a full-time job.
We’ve been fortunate that the house already gives us a strong foundation — good bones and abundant natural light from large windows. Our job is to make the most of what’s here while enjoying the home as it evolves. That balance between appreciating the present and working toward the future is where the fun lies.
Today I’m sharing a collection of breakfast rooms that I find inspiring. Some of these spaces contain elements I can imagine for our dining area, and others are different, but I hope you’ll find ideas or a style that sparks a project in your own home.
Do you take cues from your home before making larger remodeling or decorating decisions?

A quick note about something I’m excited about: my new book Make Room for What You Love will have a special preorder offer at Barnes & Noble for one day only. If you’d like to pick up a copy or order extras as gifts, keep an eye out for the promotion.

I hope these breakfast room photos offer ideas and encouragement as you plan your own spaces. Small changes can make a big difference, and taking the time to listen to your home will help you create rooms that feel right for the way you live.
