As I daydreamed about fall (happily, I might add) and considered how to begin my little seasonal series, 21 Days of Loving Fall, I kept wondering what the perfect opening would be. I paused over the idea of an attention-grabbing project or activity for Day One. I’d already shared a fall house tour and appreciated everyone’s kind responses, but somehow that didn’t feel like the true way to begin the season.
Eventually it dawned on me why I couldn’t land on a single dramatic start.
Fall isn’t something you do in one big gesture.
You can’t start fall with a sudden flourish.
Fall is something you experience. It’s a gentle rhythm that comes into the home, one falling yellow leaf at a time.

That’s the place to begin. Take a small step toward a new, comfortable rhythm at home. Maybe it means slowing down to create an intentional pattern of rest, work, and play. Perhaps it’s a new routine for cooking and enjoying meals in the kitchen. It could be a regular habit of tidying spaces that drifted into disarray during summer, or finally letting go of items you no longer want to manage. Maybe you rearrange furniture to better use your space, or focus on finishing the little details that help a room feel complete and calm.

That’s what I love most about fall: embracing or reviving the rhythms that make a house feel like home.
Today I spent an hour simply being present at home. I looked around and noticed the spots that had quietly slipped into disorder while I wasn’t paying attention. There was no agenda, no pressure, and no expectation of an instant transformation. I meandered through rooms, straightened shelves, and put things away. It wasn’t for the blog or a project deadline — it was just about returning to a peaceful nesting rhythm. That, to me, is what fall is all about.
What fall nesting rituals are you enjoying this week?

This is a special periodic series running through October and November. See Day Two here!
