My book Simple Gatherings is about creating connection. I explain that you don’t need a perfect home or an extravagant party to host a memorable get-together with friends or family. What matters most is the welcome you offer and the way you bring people together.
Hosting can feel intimidating, but try not to worry. Guests come to see you and to enjoy being welcomed into your home. After the long, unusual years we’ve had, that sense of community and connection feels especially meaningful.
You don’t have to make everything perfect, but a few simple touches can make your gatherings feel extra special and memorable for everyone who attends.

In Simple Gatherings I suggest focusing on the three elements guests remember most: atmosphere, the food, and conversation.
Conversation cards are an easy way to encourage meaningful interaction. Even when guests naturally have lots to talk about, having a stack of cards available can spark new topics and deepen conversations you might not have thought to start otherwise.
We offer free printable conversation starter cards from my book that you can download.
You may have seen the Hygge Game featured in our Gift Guides—I picked up a set to have on hand for upcoming gatherings. I peeked through the cards and can already imagine the interesting conversations they’ll inspire with family. This set is ideal for the holidays, and it also makes a thoughtful hostess gift or something to bring along when you’re invited somewhere.

If you want to pick up a set, they’re easy to find and make a fun little gift or stocking stuffer. Having a few conversation prompts on the table can help keep things relaxed and engaging for everyone.
