Family Kitchen Makeover: Installing Hardwood Flooring for Warmth and Style

If you’re new here, last June we began a kitchen remodel. We aren’t finished yet, but we’ve made steady progress. Although the project started on a bit of a whim, it was actually the result of a lot of thinking beforehand. We’ve lived in this house for nearly four years, so we had time to consider what we wanted and needed from the space. We’ve been patient to get to this point and are excited to be finally moving into the homestretch.

Everything we’re updating now is part of a larger plan to live more intentionally in our home. We have clear goals for how we want our family to live in this season and how our home can support that. From decluttering and rearranging rooms to making updates within our budget, we’ve been working with purpose.

I’ve always wanted to stay in one house for many years and renovate it top to bottom to suit our needs. After moving so often over the years, it’s a dream to be able to make changes for ourselves rather than for future owners. We have no immediate plans to move, so these projects are truly for our family. It’s a little surreal and very exciting.

Back to the project: our kitchen and family room share one open area, but the kitchen cabinetry and previous flooring broke the space into awkward zones. The layout made it difficult for the three of us — my two daughters and me — to work in the kitchen together, and guests often caused a traffic bottleneck. Reconfiguring the space was essential to improve flow and usability.

Here’s a quick recap of what we’ve completed so far:

We removed the breakfast bar and the cabinetry that divided the room.

We adjusted the space above the cabinets to eliminate a dust-catching gap.

We installed new subway tile, a new sink, and white quartz countertops.

We added a new range hood and faucet and completed tile grouting.

We chose a two-tone cabinet color scheme and are waiting for the painter to finish that update.

We have an unfinished island that’s ready to be painted and completed.

We painted walls and planned trim work along with a fireplace makeover.

Since my last update, we’ve finished a few more details, including new lighting and a pantry refresh that’s still in progress. Beyond the kitchen and family area, we’ve also been updating the master bedroom and other rooms as part of an overall effort to improve the whole house.

Now it’s time to address the flooring in the remaining areas to complete our projects this year. One of our goals has been to finish what we start, and updating the floors is a key step. We installed new hardwood in several rooms last spring, and that change transformed the house. New flooring really affects how a room looks and feels.

As you can see, the remaining floors have suffered wear from daily life, pets, and the remodel. Our preference has always been consistent, low-maintenance flooring throughout the main rooms. The main floor is compact and includes a living/dining area, family and kitchen space, an entry hall, my office, and a powder room. Rather than breaking the floor into many different materials, we want a continuous visual flow from the front door to the back of the house.

A few weeks ago Mohawk contacted me about partnering on a flooring project, and the timing couldn’t have been better. This partnership is the perfect opportunity to finish our home makeover and address those troublesome floor areas.

The partnership with Mohawk is on, and I’m thrilled to move toward completion. Updating the floors will make the house feel refreshed and cohesive — it’ll be like getting a brand new home without moving. I’ll share details about the new floors and answer questions in future posts as the project progresses.
