It was a gorgeous day in Portland when I set out for my Fall Drive By. Is there anything more lovely than a crisp autumn day? Look at that door above — doesn’t it look like a chalkboard door? I swear I can see writing around the top of the round window. A chalkboard front door is such a clever, welcoming idea. I love it.
During my drive I spotted several entries dressed for fall and a few yards fully decked out for the season. This was my least daring drive by ever — very mellow. No dramatic dodging of neighbors, no bush-hiding or fence-climbing; I simply snapped photos as I drove. I also didn’t encounter as many classic fall urns, pumpkins, and leaf arrangements as I hoped. Instead, Halloween decorations — many spooky displays — were everywhere.
This entry was especially pretty in person — the photo doesn’t quite do it justice.
This one wasn’t decorated, but I stopped because I adore the stone chimney and the porch cover. Sometimes architectural details are the best kind of fall inspiration.
Yikes — creepy skeletons. There’s something intentionally unwelcoming about this display, which I imagine is exactly the point: a truly scary Halloween house.
I was in the car when I took this one, so the corner is cropped off — sorry, I only noticed afterward.
This house featured lovely landscaping. Mums and pumpkins lined the steps, and ornamental grasses along the wall added texture and movement — a simple, elegant fall look.
Skeletons were everywhere this season — they seemed to be the decoration of the year.
I especially love these double front doors.
One house went all out — a graveyard in the yard and a giant man-eating spider on the roof.
Ew.
Ah — birds! Definitely attention-grabbing.
I’m not sure what’s on this front door — maybe some faux roadkill? In any case, it made me smile at the creativity.
My parents lived in this house for several years and were responsible for its charming remodel. I always love photographing it in autumn. This particular photo is from last year, but it still captures that cozy fall feeling.
