Fall Family Room Makeover: Cozy Updates for Autumn Living

fall family room the inspired room

Ever since that one weekend when tidying the family room turned into buying a new ottoman and rearranging the furniture, I’ve been making small tweaks to the space. Not deep cleaning—just adjustments that make the room feel better. When I first mentioned the tufted ottoman, I said I had rearranged things but forgot to come back and share the full result. So here’s a tour of how the room is shaping up (and feel free to grab a pumpkin square on your way in).

First of all, I’m loving the sofa facing the fireplace. There’s something so warm and inviting about that layout. It’s actually how the room was arranged when we first moved in, but at the time the kitchen was still in a rough “before” state, so a sofa cutting across the flow didn’t work. Now it feels right, at least for today.

Some of you may notice I still haven’t added a rug after I removed ours. Normally I’d consider a rug essential for coziness in fall, but rugs can also become a magnet for dog accidents or puppy training mishaps. For now, living without a rug is less work and more peace of mind—so no rug it is. That could change without notice.

Oh, and the fiddle-leaf fig is still recovering. I’m hoping it’ll return to the corner once it perks up.

I’m still loving the ottoman. It’s the coziest anchor for the seating area.

Of course, I always have my Plush Pumpkins out somewhere this time of year—they’re a seasonal favorite and add a soft, playful touch.

I swapped in a couple of new frames on the mantel that are large enough to make a statement. I filled them with pieces by designers I love and a sweet drawing a reader made after we lost our longtime pup Winston earlier this year. The pieces feel personal and grounding on the mantel.

Recently I was browsing at Pier One and fell for a pair of small gold end tables. I didn’t have an obvious spot for them, but placing two side-by-side created a delicate console surface that works perfectly. They’ve become a new favorite detail.

I love how they look together and how they reflect light into the room.

Turn around and you can see into the kitchen. The cable-knit blanket on the sofa is my fall favorite—soft, cozy, and perfect for cool evenings. There’s also a small but meaningful update happening in the dining room beyond the kitchen; I’ll share that soon when it’s ready.

For reference, here are a few posts that answer common questions about the rooms shown in these photos (if you don’t find what you need, feel free to ask):

Paint colors in these rooms can be found in my paint post. The kitchen remodel and its sources are documented in earlier posts. The bamboo blind project, the DIY embellished curtains, and the family-room gallery wall are also covered in separate posts.

The ottoman shown is from World Market. The trellis chair is from Pier One. The white sofa is a Pottery Barn piece I found locally.
