Seriously, I just can’t even.
Our family has a handful of long-standing autumn rituals we look forward to every year. One of the silliest, and also one of the most beloved, started back when our children were small and we had a dog named Winston. We began dressing him up in playful outfits and costumes, and the tradition stuck. The kids nicknamed him “Fashion Hound,” and that name captured exactly what it felt like—the simple joy of seeing a pet wearing something unexpected. Funny-looking animals make everyone smile, and dogs in costume always make our house feel lighter and more fun.
Each Halloween we keep the tradition alive by dressing our pups in costumes. Sometimes it feels like we’re embarrassing them, but they’re patient and good-natured about it, and the results are always worth the effort. When the kids were younger we used to take the dogs for neighborhood strolls in full costume, spreading laughs and cheer while collecting compliments and surprised smiles from neighbors. Those walks became small celebrations of community and warmth during a season that can otherwise feel busy and rushed.
This year Bella, who is Jack and Lily’s cousin, stole the show with the best costume yet. Seeing her all decked out in a little lion mane reminded us why we keep the tradition going: life gets heavy sometimes, and an unexpected moment of silliness can brighten the whole family’s day. It’s not about elaborate workmanship or a perfect photo; it’s about a shared laugh, a memory that gets told again and again, and the way a small, joyful ritual can lift spirits.
We still enjoy taking photos, but the real reward comes from the way the dogs’ good humor brings people together. Even if we no longer parade door to door like we did when the kids were toddlers, we still celebrate the season by gathering for cozy evenings, carving pumpkins, and taking turns dressing the pups for a quick photo session. Those snapshots become little time capsules of family life—evidence that we don’t take ourselves too seriously and that we make space for lightness.
Whether your fall traditions are grand or humble, the point is the same: rituals connect us. They give us reasons to pause, to laugh, and to create memories that outlast a single season. Dressing our dogs up each Halloween is a small tradition, but it encapsulates what we love about this time of year—comfort, togetherness, and a touch of whimsy.
Happy November to everyone celebrating the season. If you have a pet tradition, embrace it; the laughter it brings is worth the effort, and those moments often become the ones we cherish most.
