Eclectic Home Office Makeover: Stylish Tips for Mixing Metals

I love combining different metal finishes and textures in one room. It’s a look that works well in my home, though it might not suit every style or space. Mixing finishes and layering accessories adds depth and character, preventing a room from feeling tied to a single trend or era. By keeping an eclectic mix, you can update your decor over time while still incorporating long-loved pieces.

Last week I framed a set of vintage sea life prints in a variety of frames, and I’m really pleased with how they turned out. I’ll share more when I reveal my office soon, but for now they add a touch of whimsy and elegance and look fantastic against the new navy walls.

I’ve also brought out an antique brass magazine holder I’ve had for years. I love the little scene engraved on it and plan to use it in the office to corral favorite magazines. It’s nice to see antique brass coming back into favor—there’s a warmth and patina to aged brass that I really appreciate.

To continue the layered-metal look, I added two wall lights in a soft antique gold finish. These small fixtures will be mounted above my cozy tufted chairs to serve as reading lights and to reinforce the mixed-metal aesthetic in the room.

I’m absolutely adoring my new Anthropologie curtains. My husband helped hang them on an antique brass rod, and they bring so much personality and color to the office. I find myself distracted by them because they’re so lovely—definitely worth the splurge.

Bit by bit, layer by layer, the office is coming together. I’m enjoying the process. The next steps are installing a new ceiling light, adding blinds, and tackling the organization, and then the room should be nearly complete.

I have a few other projects to update you on, including the in-progress map wall in the hall outside the office (so many of you asked to see more) and an overdue update on what happened with the faux fireplace in the entry. I haven’t forgotten about it—there was a small snag I’ll explain in a future post.

Life gets busy sometimes and it’s hard to keep up with projects—does that ever happen to you?
