Design a Cozy Home Sanctuary: Create Your Perfect Relaxing Space

Happy Place

Do you have a happy place inside your home? Maybe it’s the chair where you pause for a moment of peace, a room that brings you joy, or a small corner you retreat to when you need to recharge or find inspiration.

In my “homebody manifesto” I wrote about how we’re often encouraged to seek self-care outside the home. While getting away can be restorative—think beaches, mountains, or a hotel stay—there’s real value in creating restorative spaces right where you live.

Home is where so much of our life unfolds, and the small choices we make every day have a big impact on how we feel. My book Dwelling explores how feeling well at home is about more than decor: it’s about caring for yourself where you live.

Though a beautifully designed room or new furniture can create a joyful spot, a happy place doesn’t require perfection. Sometimes it’s simply claiming a clutter-free corner of a room for yourself.

Other times it’s arranging a single shelf so it brings a smile, or cultivating the mindset to notice the small gifts already present in your space. People and pets naturally add happiness to a home, too. No matter how you find joy—big rooms or small corners—having at least one reliable spot where you can go to feel uplifted is a gift to yourself.

In my home, I’m happiest curled up on the living room sofa. It’s where my family and dogs gather, and during the day or at sunset the light and the view through our windows lift my spirits. We placed the sofa and a dining bench so we can sit and look outside—an intentional choice that, among many others, positively affects my well-being.

Design choices don’t need to be perfect to matter. The way you arrange seating, prioritize natural light, or clear a small area of clutter can change how you feel. Creating a spot that encourages rest, pleasure, and calm is often more important than expensive updates.

Where is your happy place at home? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

If you don’t yet have a happy spot, consider creating a small nook this week—a place for calm, joy, and restoration.
