Decorating with Moody Floral Art: Original Painting & Where to Find Similar Styles

My husband and I have collected original art since we were newlyweds. There’s something special about the history, texture and story an original piece brings to a home. Our collection isn’t extensive and we generally don’t spend a lot, but over the years we’ve picked up pieces as anniversary gifts to each other at estate sales and secondhand shops, bought souvenirs while traveling, or snapped up works that simply spoke to us when we saw them in a store or online.

Years ago we found this moody floral painting at a local garage sale and it came in a beautiful frame. It’s the kind of piece we’ve moved from house to house — it hung in every home we lived in until our last one.

When we moved into that house the painting ended up tucked away in a box while we painted and decided on wall arrangements. I intended to put it up later, but somehow it got overlooked. I give away a lot of things when we move — to our kids or friends — but original art is something I rarely part with, so I was surprised and a little baffled when I couldn’t find this one.

Thankfully it turned up during our recent move to this house. I haven’t chosen a permanent spot yet, so for now it’s sitting in the living room where I can enjoy it and be sure not to misplace it again. I love the contrast of the cheerful colors against the painting’s overall moody tone and how the ornate frame adds another layer of personality. That complexity of moods is exactly why it remains a favorite.

Even if you don’t collect or create original art, what you hang on your walls can strongly influence how you feel at home. Choosing pieces that resonate with you emotionally — whether because they’re beautiful, because they spark fond memories, or because they reflect your life and personality — makes a real difference. For me, arranging meaningful art is a calming, almost therapeutic practice.
