Creative Ways to Wrap a Gift

This season my daughters discovered several inventive ways to wrap presents using items we already had at home. They repurposed everything from Trader Joe’s paper bags to small flower clips, turning ordinary supplies into personal, charming gift finishes. I wanted to share a few of their ideas to inspire your next gift-wrapping project.

Although the holidays have passed, these techniques work great year-round for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, or any time you want a thoughtful, handmade touch.

We’ve been keeping things relaxed here—staying in pajamas, eating too much, watching movies, and enjoying time by the fire while the kids are home. Between family visits and a few cozy projects, life has felt wonderfully slow for a bit. It’s been the perfect backdrop for trying creative wrapping ideas together.

One easy approach is to combine simple materials for a layered, textured look. Scrapbook paper can serve as bright, patterned wrapping, while cut-up paper bags from the grocery store become rustic ribbon. Tie everything together with jute twine for a natural, handmade finish.

Scrapbook paper, Trader Joe’s paper bags cut into strips for “ribbon,” and jute twine create a simple, stylish package.

Handmade tags add instant personality. We made several tags from cardstock and rubber stamps—bird motifs were a favorite—and added a few hand-drawn designs for variety. Monogram stickers or simple hand-lettering give gifts a polished, personal touch without much effort.

All tags were handmade; the bird tags were stamped by hand.

Small, unexpected accents can replace traditional bows. A single decorative hair clip, a sprig of greenery, a dried flower, or a tiny handmade ornament becomes a memorable finishing detail and often doubles as an extra little gift.

For a natural or woodland theme, hand-drawn silhouettes—like a stag or other simple shapes—make striking, minimalist tags. Use a brown or black pen on light-colored paper to keep the effect rustic and elegant. These work especially well with kraft paper or recycled bag material.

Try combining textures: pair plain paper with a printed tag and a soft fabric accent, like a felt flower or a small cloth bow. These little contrasts—smooth paper, rough twine, soft fabric—make a gift feel thoughtfully composed and tactile.

A flower hair clip can be used as an unconventional bow for a feminine, playful touch.

Another quick idea: print or cut out small printable tags and tuck them under twine or ribbon. Free printable sets can be a great starting point if you want a consistent theme without creating each tag from scratch.
