Creating a Cozy Home: The Heart of Homemaking

Today is launch day for my new book Dwelling!

I love hearing wind chimes in the trees outside our open windows. They play a soft, comforting melody whenever the breeze stirs. Those gentle sounds are among the few man-made noises that truly relax me. I do best in quiet spaces—muted voices, soft music, and silenced screens.

That said, home isn’t always peaceful. It can be lively and chaotic: dogs barking at some shadow, TVs turned up too loud, and the general bustle of family life. Still, lately I notice the house growing quieter. It may be the quietest it’s been in years. My husband and I are approaching an empty nest. Our youngest, the last at home, graduates from high school this June and will head off to college.

I sense the seasons changing in our home. Some days the shift feels vivid and energized; other days it’s hazy and uncertain. I find myself pulled between excitement for what’s ahead, a wish to hold on to what’s familiar, and the unease that comes with stepping into the unknown.

We’ve already seen two daughters move out years ago, so I know the joy of watching grown children find their way. Still, imagining our house truly quiet feels new and a little strange.

I want to savor these remaining days, just as I tried to savor earlier seasons of family life. That’s not always easy. In the rush and noise of raising a young family, finding the peace needed to appreciate moments often felt impossible.

After many years of making a home—by which I mean creating a life and place of belonging whether I worked outside the house or not—I’ve learned something steady: peace in any season comes through intention. How do we live well where we are today? We don’t need to do everything perfectly. None of us does. We grow, learn, adapt, and offer ourselves grace while bringing our best selves into each season.

Whether our days are loud or quiet, joyful or challenging, we already have what we need to savor today. Presence and intention make ordinary moments meaningful.

Today is book launch day!

Today marks the launch of my new book, Dwelling. I’m grateful in seasons like this to hear from readers who also care about living thoughtfully in the place they call home.

Dwelling isn’t just about a house or its décor—though I love those things too. It’s about the ways we care for ourselves and the people who share our home.

The book is simple to read and easy to skim, but it’s best experienced slowly and with attention.

Let reading it be an act of self-care.

Inside you’ll find journal prompts to help you reflect and act—questions meant to stir your thoughts and inspire gentle change. Read with a pen nearby, paper to write on, and an open heart to notice the blessings around you.

Copies are ready to ship today.

You can order your copy of Dwelling here!

*GIVEAWAY CLOSED*

PS. I held a giveaway alongside the launch offering nurturing home and self-care items to one lucky person. Thank you to everyone who entered and shared in this season with me.
