I expected my new side courtyard outside the kitchen to be finished by spring — or at least by early summer. Plans have been delayed, but the fence is scheduled to go up this week, so there’s still hope we’ll be able to enjoy the space before winter.
The delay has a longer backstory I may share another time. Meanwhile, I’ll be posting short video updates from around the house via Instagram Stories. If you’d like behind-the-scenes peeks or quick tours, you’re welcome to follow along on my Instagram. Stories are available for 24 hours, so check frequently to catch the newest updates. If you’re new to Stories, tap my profile photo on Instagram to see any recent videos.
Until my own outdoor area is ready, I’m happily daydreaming about the possibilities.
Here are four ideas for creating an inviting outdoor space

1. Add decorative elements
Small touches make a big difference. Mirrors reflect light and make compact areas feel larger, woven baskets add texture and storage, and outdoor pillows bring color and comfort. Mix weather-resistant fabrics with natural materials for a relaxed, layered look that welcomes guests and encourages lounging.

2. Create a vertical garden
When floor space is limited, go vertical. A ladder-style planter or wall-mounted boxes let you showcase herbs, trailing plants, and seasonal blooms without crowding the ground. Vertical gardens add greenery, soften hard surfaces, and can become a living focal point for small balconies or narrow courtyards.

3. Add a firepit for cozy evenings
A firepit instantly extends the usability of an outdoor space into cooler evenings and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Portable or built-in options both work well; choose one that suits the scale of your yard and follow local safety guidelines. Surround the pit with comfortable seating and soft lighting for relaxed gatherings.

4. Create an outdoor dining area
Even a small table and a couple of chairs can transform a balcony or patio into a dining spot. Choose durable materials that can withstand the elements and add soft cushions, a runner, or a centerpiece to make meals feel special. Consider foldable furniture for flexibility in tight spaces.
My daughter Kylee recently refreshed her tiny balcony, and she’ll be sharing how it turned out here on the blog soon. Update: see her small balcony makeover in the related post below.
