Fall is almost here. Are you ready to create a cozy corner for the season? Some people welcome autumn with pumpkins on the mantel; I prefer rearranging furniture. Whatever inspires you is the right choice. There are no hard rules, but I do have a few suggestions to help you craft a comforting, intentional space.
2020 brought many unexpected changes through spring and summer, and it can feel relentless. If you’ve had to make difficult decisions or adjust to a new normal, know you’re doing the best you can. Be gentle with yourself. Even amid the hard parts, change can open the door to beautiful new routines and rhythms.
I’m sentimental about losing long sunny days outdoors, but I’m also eager to create a nurturing home base for my family as we move into fall. One of my favorite ways to do that is to set up a small cozy corner where mornings start with peace, quiet and intention — a little self-care nook where I can breathe, reflect and prepare for the day.
One of my earliest posts, written years ago, was about a quiet chair I kept in my bedroom as a haven when my kids were small. That need for a peaceful spot never goes away, even as children grow older. This week I began my fall prep by rearranging furniture so I’d have a dedicated place to retreat to on crisp mornings. I’ll share how I use it during our annual fall nesting series, starting September 1, when we’ll explore seasonal decorating, daily routines and ways to make your own self-care corner meaningful.

If you’d like to create your own cozy self-care corner this fall, I’ve put together a simple guide to get you started. If you build one, I’d love to see it — these small spaces become treasured spots for daily resetting and calm.
How to Create Your Cozy Self-Care Corner
- Choose your coziest chair. Use a seat that feels comfortable and inviting. I moved furniture I already own so my favorite chair sits by the fireplace. Place your chair where mornings are likely to be quiet and where you’ll be most inspired to use it.
- Pick a favorite fall mug or two. I enjoy savoring my morning coffee rather than rushing it. A special mug makes a ritual feel intentional and comforting. Keep one nearby for tea or coffee when you sit down to begin your day.
- Add a small stool or side table. A low table or stool is useful for holding a mug, a book, or a journal. It keeps essentials within easy reach and helps the corner feel organized.
- Include a soft throw blanket. A cozy blanket is essential for fall mornings. Even if mornings stay warm where you live, a throw adds texture and warmth to the chair and the overall vignette.
- Keep a journal and a notebook handy. A journal helps you reflect and set intentions; a notebook is great for lists, ideas and tracking routines. A nice pen makes the process more inviting.
- Place a fresh plant nearby. A small plant on a nearby table or shelf brings life and a touch of nature to your corner, even when fresh flowers are scarce.
- Use a quality diffuser and pure plant oils. Essential oils can support daily routines, uplift mood and contribute to a calming atmosphere. If you use oils, keep a diffuser near your corner for regular use as part of your seasonal rituals.
