Coastal Cottage Bedroom Makeover: Serene Sea-Inspired Style

Last summer we decided to refresh our bedroom. It wasn’t that the room wasn’t lovely before — it was — but the paint had been there for years and felt dated. We wanted to make the space truly our own and create a mood that matched how we use the room every day.

We still have projects pending, but here’s an update on where things stand and the thought behind our design choices.

We considered many directions for this room, but our final decision came down to a few key points:

First, we wanted paint to set the mood. Even though we love blue, we decided against painting the walls blue or blue-striped for two main reasons. One, we have a Robin’s Egg Blue Ethan Allen Quincy Bed — a Facebook Marketplace find — and we wanted it to read as the focal point, not blend into the walls. Any blue we liked matched the bed too closely, so the contrast would be lost.

Second, the room receives mostly northern light, so we wanted a cozy, warm atmosphere that would let the bed and the moody blues of the view outside really stand out. That contrast helps the landscape feel like part of the room’s appeal.

There were several other considerations when choosing our palette. I’ve had lots of questions about paint colors, so I assembled a paint color round-up to answer them. You can also find a “get the look” bedroom post if you’d like direct references for this design.

Other factors that guided our choices:

  • We wanted a practical and affordable update — paint felt like the best option instead of wallpaper or paneling for now.
  • We already use blue elsewhere in the house and plan to keep blue in additional rooms, so this bedroom didn’t need to make that statement.
  • We wanted the bedroom to feel like a special retreat — creative and intentional rather than trendy.
  • Each room in our home should have its own personality.
  • We wanted warmth to contrast with the predominantly blue and gray views outside, especially in winter when the landscape reads stormy and dramatic.
  • We aimed to complement our coastal surroundings in an unexpected, not literal, way.

Our goal was to make the bedroom feel like a daily escape. To guide our decisions we imagined arriving at a cozy Cottage by the Sea bed and breakfast. That feeling helped shape every choice.

We also used my Room Recipe Method to refine the plan. This approach focuses on timeless principles and personal preferences rather than following trends. It helped us make decisions with clarity and confidence.

I teach this process in a 5-week Room Recipe Workshop inside the HomeBody Gathering Place. The workshop helps you discover what truly makes a room yours and how to make decorating choices that fit your life and tastes.

The method encourages using what you have and making intentional choices. When I feel indecisive, returning to these principles always gets the project moving again.

Although we do live by the sea now, this “cottage by the sea” mood has long been a dream of mine regardless of location. In this room we selected colors and furnishings to evoke that relaxed, vacation-like feeling so it feels like an inn where we can always unwind.

It’s important to decide the mood you want before making changes. That clarity influences every subsequent choice, from paint to textiles to lighting.

To define the mood I considered when we use this room most. Although it’s a bedroom, we enjoy it throughout the day — pausing to watch boats, sunrise, or sunset. We wanted the space to feel enchanting in daylight and cozy and inviting at night.

Once we were confident in the mood, we began painting and arranging the room.

We still need to paint the trim, but here are the main finishes and items we used:

Painted striped wall colors:

  • Classic Light Buff by Sherwin-Williams
  • Misty Air by Benjamin Moore (also used on the ceiling)

Furniture in this room reflects a “use what you have” approach:

The Facebook Marketplace Quincy Bed that kicked off the whole scheme and provides a coastal focal point.

Bedding is from Quince in a linen ocean shade that pairs beautifully with the curtains. Layering bedding allows a fresh seasonal look without replacing everything — I choose pieces that will mix and match within our palette.

A vintage rattan shelf found at a flea market has traveled between homes and remains versatile. A dresser from a previous house returned here after several years spent in another room. An Ikea chair with slipcovers, a small table from my mom, and a blue glass lamp with a new fun shade add personality.

We installed a beaded center light fixture a few years ago and paired secondhand nightstands with blue-and-white lamps. Baskets store linens and pillows, keeping the space tidy and textured.

For now we chose no full rug to showcase the wood floors, but a washable runner sits beside the bed to help our dogs avoid slipping. Clear curtain rods with aged brass accents feel subtle and elevated, echoing a nautical, island vibe.

We found a pair of framed bird prints that feel just right here. New curtain panels with a subtle island motif pull the palette together — we chose to hang a single panel on each side so they read as a cohesive pair without overwhelming the windows. They’re both decorative and functional.

We’ll eventually select custom shades for the doors, but inexpensive options work well for now while we continue refinements.

I’ll share a follow-up post showing how the room looks at night and a detailed post about painting the stripes. Creating a cottage-by-the-sea aesthetic is largely a mindset — it’s about shaping your home to reflect the life you want to live, wherever you are.

I’ve also created digital Dreambooks to inspire fellow cottage lovers and will soon release a new Cottage by the Sea guide for spring. If you’d like more help crafting your own home’s mood, I’d love for you to join the HomeBody Gathering Place where I guide this intentional approach to design.
