Chic Rattan Shelving Makeover from a Flea Market Find

Navy Blue Office - Rattan Bookshelf

The other Sunday I wandered through our local flea market, the kind of slow, casual browsing that often yields nothing — and that’s okay. Sometimes the best finds come when you least expect them. On this trip I struck gold: a beautiful rattan shelving unit that changed my office instantly.

The piece stood near the entrance, six and a half feet tall and solidly built. I knew the moment I saw it exactly where it would go. Twenty minutes later it was in my car and set up in my office: no shipping, no long wait — just instant, affordable style. Finding a one-of-a-kind item locally has a special kind of satisfaction.

Compared to the heavier bookcases that used to occupy the room, this rattan unit feels open and airy without sacrificing sturdiness. It brings texture, warmth, and personality while serving a very practical purpose.

When I shop flea markets or thrift stores, I try to be aware of my own style and needs, but I also keep an eye on retail options and pricing. That way I can spot a real deal when I find one. For comparison, I’d seen a similar rattan bookshelf at Serena and Lily for around $700 plus shipping. I paid $80 for mine — a clear bargain that made the purchase feel even better.

I tucked the shelving unit between my desk and the window, and it fits perfectly. Even though I don’t need more book storage in this room, the shelves are ideal for notebooks, magazines, small baskets, mail and filing organizers, and a dedicated spot for the routers and cables that used to clutter the floor.

You might remember another secondhand treasure in this room: the secretary and hutch on the opposite wall. Together these pieces give me the storage and character I love in my office.

Some readers have asked how I find flea markets and what they’re like. We’re lucky to have a local market held in a warehouse next to a vintage shop called Uptown Mercantile & Marketplace. On Sunday afternoons the warehouse opens to vendors who bring vintage and secondhand items to sell in booths. I’ve found many great pieces there over the years — everything from a green garden stool to a white entry dresser and even an iron arbor now in my backyard.

I don’t decorate my entire home with flea market finds, but nearly every room has at least one secondhand or vintage piece. Mixing in pre-owned items creates a unique, personal style — you’re unlikely to find the exact same combination anywhere else.
