Today we have a Reader’s Question:
I think the scary thing about decorating is……What happens when “all of a sudden” you realize your tastes have changed and you are sitting amongst items you’ve bought over the years that are just not doing it for you any more?
I love so many things I see on your blog, other blogs, magazines…..not so much on TV, anymore, (where did all the good decorating shows go?) …… I know I’m being influenced in a good way ……. but how do you make the switch without breaking the bank?
This is a common and important question. Many people reach a point where their collected furniture and accessories no longer reflect their evolving tastes. Starting over completely is rarely practical, and transforming what you already own into a look you love can feel intimidating. The good news is that a fresh style can often be achieved on a modest budget with thoughtful, incremental changes.
1) Start with one room. Focus your energy on a single space so you don’t get overwhelmed. Changing one room at a time lets you test ideas without committing to a whole-house overhaul.
2) Find an inspiration photo. Pick a picture that captures the mood or palette you’re drawn to. You don’t need to copy it exactly—use it to identify elements you like, such as lighter tones, simpler lines, or a particular texture. Inspiration photos help you clarify the direction you want to take.
3) Identify what you dislike about the current style. Compare your room to the inspiration photo. Is your space too dark, too busy, dated, or lacking personality? Pinpointing what bothers you makes it easier to decide what to change.
4) Re-design in a day. If you want a dramatic shift, clear the room completely and bring pieces back in slowly. Removing everything—even window treatments—creates a blank slate and makes it easier to see how a few strategic items can reshape the space.
5) Do a mini-makeover. If a full purge feels extreme, remove only the pieces you truly dislike or that are beyond repair. Clear away clutter and small decorative items so the room reads as simpler and more cohesive. De-cluttering is the fastest way to change how a room feels.
6) Make small, budget-friendly changes. After decluttering, keep the pieces you love and update a few targeted elements. Working with your inspiration photo, consider these affordable updates—many can be done over time:
- Fresh paint for walls or furniture to shift mood and unify the room.
- New or updated window treatments to change light and texture.
- Stylish accent pillows—an easy, inexpensive way to add color and pattern.
- Reupholstering select pieces or adding new fabric touches.
- New rugs to define zones and introduce pattern or warmth.
- Throws or even an attractive scarf draped over a chair for instant change.
- Refinished or new lamps and lampshades to update lighting and silhouette.
- Fewer, larger accessories rather than many small items for a modern look.
- New mats or painted frames to refresh artwork inexpensively.
- Introduce new textures—wood, metal, woven fibers—to add depth.
- Pair unexpected combinations: old with new, shiny with rough, high-end with bargain finds.
- Reuse existing items in new ways and try moving pieces between rooms for a fresh perspective.
7) Shop your home and secondhand sources. Before buying new, see what you can borrow from other rooms. If you need additional pieces, check thrift stores, resale shops, garage sales, and discount retailers. A few well-chosen items can dramatically change the overall look.
If your furniture no longer fits your new style, consider high-quality secondhand finds. Upscale resale shops often have gently used branded pieces at a fraction of retail cost. In many cases one well-chosen new (or “new to you”) piece can become the focal point that pulls the rest of the room together while staying within budget.
Enjoy the process—small steps and a clear vision will help you transform your space without overspending.
