I have been feeling a little blue around my house lately.

Or maybe even feeling a lot blue.

No, not in the sad way—I’m talking about the color blue. Lately my home has been calling for blues and cool grays, and I’ve been listening.

If you remember, I often say my house and furniture seem to tell me what color they want to be. It sounds a little silly, but creating inspiration boards—Pinterest boards, mood boards, or simple sketches—really helped me recognize that blue was the direction I kept returning to. Seeing variations together made it clear this palette felt right.

You might wonder why someone who loves warm, cozy fall tones would shift toward blues and grays. The key for me has been layering. Warm wood floors, textured fabrics, and varied accent colors keep the palette from feeling cold or flat. Instead, the blues and grays feel calm, collected, and unexpectedly cozy—more like a snug beach house than an icy space.

Once I settled on a core color scheme and established it through paint and a few major pieces, decorating got a lot easier. With foundational colors set, I stopped second-guessing every accessory. New items either harmonize with the established palette and stay, or they clash and go. That simple rule has reduced mistakes and given me confidence when shopping and styling.

I still enjoy pops of other colors—teals, soft corals, and warm neutrals—but the blues and grays act as the glue holding everything together. They create a consistent backdrop so the smaller, more playful elements can shine without overwhelming the space.

Establishing a clear foundational color scheme may not be revolutionary, but it has made a tangible difference in how I decorate and live in my home.

Over the next post I’ll share some of the newest blue additions I’ve brought into the house as I continue settling in for the season.

Do you have a solid foundational color palette in your home?
What colors are inspiring you right now?

I write for My Colortopia, part of Glidden, and I’ve been enjoying projects that celebrate color and inspiration. If you’re inspired by color, look for community projects where people share photos and ideas to build a visual mosaic of what moves them. Participating in color-driven projects can be a fun way to refine your own tastes and collect fresh ideas for your home.

I have partnered with Glidden/AkzoNobel Paints as part of the My Colortopia program. As always, the thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
