Today I have a simple, pretty fall idea to share that might inspire you to think beyond the usual throw blanket and add a little extra cozy charm to your home this season.
Plus, it’s BUT WHERE DO I PUT THE COUCH? BOOK LAUNCH DAY (details below)!
Fall is the perfect time to mix textiles and add layers of comfort and style to pieces you already love.
There’s something about extra layers that makes a space feel instantly cozier on a chilly day.
Cold weather reminds me of my grandma, who insisted I wear long pants and a sweater whenever it dropped below 77 degrees. Now I’m the one suggesting layers to the young ones — I love sweaters and comfy pants!
You can approach fall decorating the same way: look around and ask which pieces would benefit from an extra layer.
A buffet? A bench? An ottoman? A dresser?
We all know a throw on a chair or sofa adds warmth, but try something unexpected to make a bigger impact.
Add texture and personality with items like a tapestry or woven rug, a table runner, a curtain panel, or even a pretty scarf.

Try layering a table runner or a small rug over an ottoman or bench for a fresh, unexpected look.
Yes — you can do that.
Small rugs don’t have to stay on the floor, and runners don’t have to stay on tables.
I once hung a rug on the wall and later used that same rug on a bench. Why not reuse pieces in new ways? Adding texture, mixing colors and patterns, and experimenting with combinations gives furniture and rooms an instant refresh.
Don’t overthink it. Have fun puttering around the house and trying unexpected pairings. Your signature style will emerge, and you’ll feel snug as a bug in a rug this fall.
