Inspiration: Wood Plank Walls
From high-end homes to DIY projects and decor blogs, wood plank walls are a popular trend that also feels timeless. I’ve always loved wood walls — many of my previous houses had original paneling or board-and-batten that gave them character. I’m not following a fad so much as honoring that classic, cozy look. The good news is a trend can easily become a lasting style.

Wood on the walls gives a newer house instant warmth and character — a cottage-like charm that feels lived-in and welcoming. I have several walls I’d like to clad in wood over the next few months, so I’ve been collecting inspirational photos to help decide how to proceed.
Below are examples of horizontal plank walls in a variety of rooms. While this post focuses on horizontal installation, planks can be installed vertically, diagonally or in custom patterns depending on the look you want.

Plank walls can transform transitional spaces like stairwells into focal points and make even small areas feel intentional and styled.

In nurseries and bedrooms, planked walls add a soft, textured backdrop that works with many decor palettes.

Pairing planked walls with barn doors or other rustic elements reinforces a relaxed, farmhouse-inspired aesthetic.

A plank wall can be used on an accent wall or wrap an entire room, depending on how bold you want the effect to be.

Lightly whitewashed or bleached planks brighten a room while preserving the texture and grain of the wood.

Painted planks expand your options — white is classic, but colors like soft blue can create a fresh, unexpected look while keeping the wood texture visible.
Natural, unstained wood planks are another beautiful option — warm, organic and timeless. Mixing different plank styles and finishes in one home can enhance character and create a layered, collected feel.
