Barn Doors
I I have always been drawn to old doors. Over the years we’ve collected a variety of shutter-style and paneled doors, each one bringing its own charm and character. There are countless creative ways to repurpose doors, but using them as sliding barn doors is both stylish and practical — especially when you want them to function as actual doors.
Old doors often look amazing, but they don’t always fit standard doorways. If the dimensions don’t match, modifying the frame or the door can be difficult. Installing barn-style sliding hardware solves this problem by allowing you to mount a door on the outside of the opening. This approach not only creates an attractive, architectural focal point, it also gives you the option to slide the door closed for privacy. Sliding barn doors are a great space-saving alternative to swinging doors, which require clearance to open and can interfere with furniture placement.
Using reclaimed or vintage doors as sliding barn doors also offers eco-friendly benefits: you’re reusing existing materials and preserving a piece of history. The natural wear and patina of an old door can add warmth and texture to modern interiors, creating a contrast that feels intentional and lived-in. In addition, they’re versatile — whether you prefer a rustic farmhouse look, a refined painted finish, or a distressed, industrial vibe, the right hardware and finish will help the door suit your decor.
When planning a barn door installation, consider a few practical details: measure the opening carefully to ensure the door fully covers the doorway when closed; choose hardware rated for the door’s weight; and allow for wall clearance so the door can slide fully open without hitting trim or light switches. If a vintage door is slightly too tall or wide, small adjustments or a custom track can often accommodate it without losing the door’s original character.
Repurposing old doors as barn doors is a simple, stylish way to add personality and functionality to your home. What are your favorite ways to reuse vintage doors?
