It was a gorgeous day in Portland when I set out for a little fall drive-by. Is there anything more lovely than an autumn afternoon? On my route I spotted an entry with a round window that looked as if someone had written around the glass—could it be a chalkboard door for the front entry? What a clever idea, and I loved imagining the seasonal messages that might appear there.
I photographed several front doors and yards dressed up for fall and will share the highlights here. This was my least daring drive-by yet—very low-key and relaxed. I didn’t have to sneak around or duck into bushes; I just stopped and took pictures. I expected to see more classic fall urns, pumpkins and leaf garlands, but instead the neighborhood favored spookier Halloween displays this year.

I thought this entry was especially pretty—more so in person than in the photo.

This house wasn’t decorated for the season, but I stopped for the stone chimney and the covered porch—those architectural details are lovely any time of year.

Yikes—creepy skeletons. There’s an unwelcoming vibe here, but that’s exactly the point for a Halloween display.

I was in the car for this one and accidentally cropped the corner off—sorry about that.

This home had beautiful landscaping. The porch looked welcoming with mums and pumpkins along the steps, and the ornamental grasses along the wall added great texture.

Skeletons seemed to be everywhere this year—an unmistakable seasonal theme.

I love the look of these double front doors—classic and inviting, even among the Halloween displays.

One house really went all out, with a graveyard in the front yard and a giant spider on the roof—definitely full commitment to spooky decor.

Ew.

Birds in the scene gave an extra jolt of eeriness—perfect for Halloween.

There was a variety of creative touches on doors—some funny, some a little grisly. Every house had its own take on the season.

This last home was remodeled by my parents years ago, and I always enjoy photographing it in autumn. The curb appeal and detailing look charming in fall light. These images include a few taken last year, but the scenes still feel seasonal and inspiring.
Alrighty, there you go! Another drive by!
If you enjoyed this little roundup, feel free to join in: take your own fall drive-by photos and share them. It’s fun to compare how neighbors interpret autumn and Halloween through porch decor, pumpkins, mums and creative door accents.
Mr. Linky Directions:
You can link up any time through Halloween. Here’s how:
1) In your blog post, mention that you’re participating in this Fall Drive By and link back to the post. 2) Copy the direct link to the specific drive-by post (not your main blog URL). 3) Place that direct post link in the Mr. Linky form. If you need help finding the correct link, ask. Links that don’t follow these steps may be removed to keep the list useful for readers.
If a link previously listed is no longer visible, it was likely removed because it pointed to a homepage instead of a specific post.
Enjoy the ideas!
