HHello! It’s Courtney. I can’t believe it’s already been about three months since I moved into my very first apartment.
From the moment I started planning this move, my design-loving heart was full of ideas. I began with the essentials and a few accessories I’ve collected over the years, and it felt cozy right away. Still, creating a home is a process. Slowly I’ve added personal touches that make this apartment truly mine — and now that sweater weather is here, I’m all about making the place extra cozy.
When I last shared my space, someone commented that it looks like a “happy place.” I loved hearing that. It made me think about small ways to make your home spark joy. Who wouldn’t want that?

Here are four ways to make your home spark joy:
1) Sprinkle in memories
There’s something special about being surrounded by items that remind you of family, friends, pets and travels. Those objects tell the story of your life and the people you love. Personal mementos are what separate a lived-in home from a staged showroom — they give warmth and meaning.
Choosing items with intention makes a difference. Photos, souvenirs and small keepsakes don’t have to be extravagant; when they reflect moments that matter, they bring joy every time you see them.

I love having a kitchen and a dining area where I can invite people over. One little custom piece I added is a cheese board with the word “feast” — a simple reminder to gather friends around my table and make new memories. Calendars and custom art featuring smiling faces and favorite moments are another easy way to add joy. A personalized memo board keeps special notes and photos on display, and handmade items also make thoughtful gifts.

2) Decorate with positivity
I intentionally fill my home with positive reminders — mottos and quotes that lift me up. Seeing encouraging words around the house helps me stay upbeat, even when life feels heavy.

Some of the custom accessories I use reflect little mantras I love. Examples include a “Cozy Vibes Only” sherpa throw, a “No Bad Days” catch-all tray, a cutting board labeled “Feast,” and a “Treat Yourself” biscotti jar. Personalizing everyday items makes them both useful and inspiring.
- A cozy sherpa throw becomes a reminder to slow down and relax.
- A catch-all tray by the door helps keep keys and phone organized while sharing a positive message.
- A customized cutting board turns a functional piece into a meaningful accent.
- A labeled jar on the counter adds charm and personality to everyday routines.
Think about your own favorite mottos. How could you weave them into your decor? Personal touches help your space reflect who you are.

3) Set the right mood
A joyful home doesn’t have to match a single look. For some people joy is bright and cheerful; for others it’s warm and moody, minimalist and serene, or eclectic and travel-inspired. The key is to create a mood that calms and energizes you.
Make a list of words that describe the atmosphere you want — cozy, airy, calming, vibrant, collected — and use that as a guide for choosing colors, textures and furnishings. Decorating with your personal mood in mind makes the space feel authentic.

4) Create stress-free zones
Whether you’re naturally tidy or often feel scattered, having organized zones brings more calm into daily life. When essentials like keys, wallets and phones have a predictable place, you avoid frantic searches and start the day with less stress.
Make organization beautiful and personal: a pretty dish by the door, labeled storage baskets, or a memo board for reminders. Small organization habits reduce daily friction and increase joy.

I have a small dish near the entry with my motto “No Bad Days,” which is where I drop my phone and keys. It’s a tiny ritual that helps me feel more centered before I walk out the door.

If you’re shopping for a gift or treating yourself, personalized home items bring together practicality and sentiment. I also appreciate when gifts arrive in thoughtful packaging — it makes the whole experience feel special.
