It’s been a whirlwind few weeks at our house. You may have noticed I went quiet for several days — things got unexpectedly hectic. Just before I left town I experienced a life-changing, exciting event: after talking about moving to Seattle since spring, we finally took the leap and began the process of selling our home.
I felt nervous because my son is due to start school in September, so depending on how the sale went he would either stay here or begin at a new school. Sometimes the only way to know what will happen is to take a leap of faith and put the plan out into the world. I wished we’d listed earlier to allow more time and less stress, but we agreed that if the house didn’t sell within a few weeks we would simply remove the listing at the end of August and let the idea go. We didn’t want months of uncertainty. With that plan in mind, we called a realtor on a Thursday to ask questions and schedule a visit.
To our surprise, we didn’t even get a sign in the yard before we had a signed contract. Immediately we faced the reality of having only weeks to pack, move out, and — well — temporarily have no place to live. While that sounds frightening, we were relieved to have a contract in hand. If we had to be between homes for a while, so be it. Almost as soon as we got the news, I boarded a plane to speak at an event across the country. House hunting remotely added another layer of adventure to the whole experience.

I look forward to sharing the rest of the story with you — there are a few twists and turns ahead. Leaving a home I love feels bittersweet, and I’m still sorting through those emotions. Before I write everything out, though, I need to go pack.
PS. I may share some of what’s happening around the house on Instagram, so if you’re not following, that’s where I’ll likely post quick updates. I’m also considering trying a live stream on Periscope. My daughter Courtney and I accidentally streamed once from a restaurant — it was awkward but entertaining — so I’m a little nervous about doing one on purpose. If I try it, you can find me on Periscope at @theinspiredroom, and I’ll also announce any live sessions on Twitter.
