I’m a devoted believer in making the bed every morning. It’s a small habit I’ve written about in my books and many blog posts because it genuinely improves daily life. Lately I’ve been enjoying my newly refreshed bedroom, and during our “A Lovely January” challenge I focused on simple updates that make our space feel like home. A few modest changes have completely transformed how we feel about the room.
One recent addition I’m loving is a set of patterned heart sheets. Little details like these make bed-making a pleasure. Why not add a touch of fun? Patterned sheets are a cheerful surprise when you pull back the covers at night, and seeing the pattern peeking out each morning can be an invitation to tidy the bed. I find they add personality and joy to the room.

That said, I still appreciate plain soft white sheets. They’re versatile, timeless, and easy to store—sometimes simplicity wins. For many years we used white sheets almost exclusively as a way to declutter and simplify. If pared-back bedding makes you happy, embrace it. Do what you love in your home.
When our children were younger I often bought them patterned sheets they liked. It was an inexpensive way to refresh a bedroom as tastes changed, without replacing larger items like comforters. Switching between flannel sheets in winter and lighter cotton in summer became a seasonal ritual that was both practical and fun.

Now that we’re empty nesters, I’ve decided to have fun with patterned sheets in our own bedroom. Storage is limited in our smaller house—we don’t have a built-in linen closet—yet I’m making space for what I love. Mixing my heart sheets with striped shams and other bedding pieces gives the room a unique, happy feel that reflects both of us.
Besides the main bed, I also keep a rattan daybed in my office area, which gets patterned sheets too. With fewer rooms to decorate, I’m focusing creativity on seasonal updates for our primary bedroom, combining quilts, shams, and different sheet patterns to keep the look fresh.
I’ve made storage work by keeping extra sets of sheets and shams in the dresser and in lidded baskets, so switching looks is convenient. That small bit of organization makes it simple to mix and match whenever I want.
Below are some of the patterned sheets and shams I’ve purchased for the bed and daybed over the past year, along with a few others I find fun. I’m excited to share more mix-and-match looks for the bedroom in the coming months.

Having a single focus room during A Lovely January has been invigorating, and I’m continuing a focus for February. Next month I’ll shift toward enhancing daily routines—what I call “romanticizing routines.” I discuss this idea in my new book and will share practical ways to make everyday tasks feel more meaningful and enjoyable.
Will you join me in romanticizing your routines next month? I’ll share tips and ideas to help you create a more lovely life at home through small, intentional changes.
