Enchanting cottage gates with cutout design details
While planning ideas for our new small backyard, I came across a photo I took years ago of a delightful gate and house we spotted on a walk in Seattle. That garden gate with the rose cutout is so charming. Cottage-style gates have always captivated me—they suggest that a secret, special space lies just beyond.
My own family will have a gate leading to my parents’ new cottage entrance, and I’m excited to see it come together. I loved the little window cutout in the gate at our previous home; it invited curiosity and daydreams about the garden on the other side. Gates with windows or cutouts add personality and invite a sense of discovery to any yard.

There are many ways to add charm to functional elements in outdoor spaces. Simple design touches—like a carved motif, a small window, or an arched top—can transform an ordinary gate into a focal point. They also set the tone for the garden beyond, suggesting a cottage-style landscape filled with flowers, vines, and inviting pathways.
This summer I look forward to working in our compact backyard and shaping it into a cozy cottage garden. I’m sharing a collection of delightful gates featuring cutout designs that bring personality and warmth to exterior spaces. I hope these visuals inspire your next gate or garden project.
