Brighten a Dark Corner with a No-Wire Wall Sconce Installation

We love this little corner of our living room. The built-in bench and bookcase are charming, but without a light source the space felt a bit gloomy, especially on winter evenings.

Our intention is to eventually install wall sconces throughout the room, but that wasn’t something we could do right before Christmas. Instead, we used a simple, temporary solution that gave the area a warm, inviting glow without any wiring. When we hire an electrician for other projects, we’ll have the sconce wired in permanently then.

You might recall a similar rechargeable light bulb trick from our previous home. We had extra sconces left over from that house, so we brought one here. The sconce fits perfectly on the side of the bookcase and looks like it belongs there. Cozy, warm light makes a huge difference in how a room feels — and even when the light is off, the fixture adds a comforting touch to the space.

Rechargeable light bulbs are a practical option for situations like this. Because they are rechargeable rather than battery-operated, you avoid the ongoing expense and waste of disposable batteries. I also prefer the warm tone these bulbs provide — many puck-style battery lights tend to give off a cooler, less cozy light.

The trade-off is that rechargeable bulbs need to be recharged. I recharge the bulb in a plugged-in lamp; I keep a corded light socket in my office for that purpose. To make life easier, I own two rechargeable bulbs so one is always charging while the other is in use. It adds a small step to using the light, but it’s a simple routine that keeps the space feeling warm and welcoming without immediate wiring work.

A rechargeable light bulb isn’t as instant as flipping a wall switch, but for the immediate benefit of a sconce where I wanted it, it’s worth the extra step. If you can wire a sconce now, that’s ideal. But whether you use a lamp, a wired sconce, a battery-operated fixture, or candlelight, adding warm illumination will transform the mood of a room.
