Winter, spring, summer or fall — where would you choose to live year-round? For me, it’s always near the water. Decorating with a lakeside or seaside aesthetic instantly feels like home, no matter the season.

The stretch of time between summer and fall is one of my favorites by the water. Our backyard looks out over the Puget Sound in the Pacific Northwest, and those transitional weeks often bring cool, crisp mornings, wispy clouds on sunny afternoons, and pink-tinged sunsets that make the water glow.
I’ve lived near lakes and the sea for most of my life, and those surroundings have shaped my personal style. When I think of the perfect day, I picture a late-summer afternoon at a lake house or a cozy vacation spot by the ocean. You can recreate that relaxed lakeside feeling in your own home — you don’t need to live on the water to capture the mood.
To show how simple it can be, we assembled two lakeside-style mood boards using items found at Walmart. The pieces are affordable and work together to create a breezy, coastal vibe.

Walmart has a surprising number of cute, budget-friendly pieces that suit a lakeside aesthetic. Seeing them together on the mood board made me eager to decorate. I ordered several of the items: the white lanterns featured in this post, an adorable bench, and other small accessories that bring a relaxed, coastal charm to my backyard. The cart shown in one of the boards even resembles a vintage piece I already own.

Let your personal taste guide your choices. Combine furniture and accents that convey a laid-back lake house atmosphere if that’s what you love. A few intentional, mood-setting pieces can change the feel of a room or elevate your current décor.

The two white lanterns I ordered arrived last week and are the perfect accessory for this “in-between” season in my yard. I especially love their nautical rope handles. While they look lovely outdoors, I’m excited to bring them inside for fall and winter styling. Choosing pieces that transition between seasons makes decorating more versatile and lasting.

On a practical note, I recently started using a new outdoor storage shed to keep cushions and accessories protected between seasons. It’s a small change that helps maintain the look of my outdoor spaces year-round.
