Vintage Blue and White Platters: Care, Styling, and Buying Guide

A while back I was browsing Facebook Marketplace and spotted a vintage blue-and-white platter that stopped me in my tracks. It was too far away to pick up, so I let it go, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I had never seen this pattern before, so I did a bit of digging on eBay and discovered two more vintage blue-and-white platters plus a large bowl. Each piece featured different whimsical scenes—some even included sailboats. The maker is Vtg Sanyei, a brand I sometimes see on Etsy.

I adore dishes that tell a story with different scenes, so I couldn’t resist. One by one I bought all three. The “winter scene” platter I won through a bid—bidding can sometimes score you a much better price.

Fortunately the seller accepted my offer right away, so I ended up with a great deal and was very pleased.

Now the only decision is where to display them. They are large, and I live in a smaller home with limited wall space.

I bought heavy-duty plate hangers because these pieces are quite heavy. I’m weighing whether to hang them or to place them on kitchen shelves with sturdy stands. Either option will require a little planning to make sure they’re secure and showcased well.

Normally I avoid buying items without a designated spot, but these were worth making an exception for. I can always use plate stands on open shelving if I decide against hanging them, so I’m confident they’ll find a home.

Stay tuned—I’ll share where these end up!
