Inspiration: Wood Plank Walls

From stylish high-end homes to DIY projects and design blogs, wood plank walls have become a popular and enduring trend in interior design. I’ve always loved wood walls—many of my previous houses featured original paneling and board-and-batten that I still miss. This look isn’t just trendy; it creates a timeless, classic feel that suits both older homes and modern renovations.

Wood planks add instant character to newer houses, giving them a cozy, cottage-like warmth. I’m planning to add planked walls to several rooms in the coming months and have gathered these inspiration photos to share. Below are examples of horizontal plank installations in a range of settings—living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, nurseries, and stairways.

A plank-covered stairway or hallway can create a striking transition between spaces, lending texture and visual interest without overwhelming the décor.

Plank walls also work beautifully in nurseries and children’s rooms, offering a warm, comforting backdrop that pairs well with painted trim and playful accents.

Whether you prefer a painted finish or natural wood tones, horizontal planks can be adapted to many styles from rustic to contemporary.

White planked walls brighten a room and provide a clean, versatile backdrop for furniture and art. They’re especially effective in smaller spaces that benefit from added texture without darkening the room.

If white isn’t your preference, consider painted planks in a soft color. Blue plank walls, for example, can evoke a coastal or cottage feel while still providing a distinctive backdrop.

Natural wood planks bring warmth and texture that many homeowners love. The photo above shows a family beach house with natural wood walls—an example of how untreated or lightly finished planks can create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. Mixing different types and styles of wood paneling in a single home can also enhance character and charm when done thoughtfully.
