Courtney’s Big Move: New City, New Beginnings

HHello! I’m Courtney (Melissa’s daughter). While my mom and dad are enjoying a well-deserved trip to Hawaii, I wanted to share a personal update about a big change in my life.

If you follow me on Instagram or have followed The Inspired Room for a while, you might know I’ve lived in my first Seattle apartment for the past two and a half years. That little place has meant a lot to me—if you’re curious you can find my apartment tour elsewhere on the site.

Today I’m announcing that I’m MOVING, and I’m excited to share where I’m headed and what I’m planning.

Deciding to move has been bittersweet because I truly love my current apartment. Aside from a tiny bedroom I rented at my sister Kylee’s house years ago, this has been my first place all on my own, so it holds a lot of memories. Over the past couple of years I’ve grown a lot personally (and my plants have seen both success and failure—RIP to the crispy ones). It’s been a cozy spot to come home to and recharge.

So why move? I could certainly stay and be content, but I have other goals and dreams I want to pursue. Leaving a home that served me well is a little sad, but I’m choosing to embrace a new season and mix things up.

Here’s the fun part: moving means a new design project is in the works—my favorite part of relocating.

Where am I moving? I’ll be designing my parents’ lower level into a cozy little apartment starting in February.

You’ve probably seen parts of their lower level on the blog before. It already has many advantages: new wood floors, plenty of natural light, an exterior entrance near the office, a bedroom, bathroom, laundry room, and a living room with a fireplace. I plan to convert the laundry room into a compact kitchen while still making use of the main kitchen upstairs when needed. Bonus: I’ll be much closer to my two favorite fluffy dogs, Jack and Lily.

I also work full time for The Inspired Room, so my commute will be delightfully short.

I’ve been sketching design plans, shopping for small-space storage solutions, and planning a few DIY projects I hope go well. I’ll document the process on the blog and via Instagram stories, so I hope you’ll follow along for the behind-the-scenes updates.

I’ll miss my apartment, but the prospect of creating a fresh, functional small space gives me so much energy and inspiration.

How long will I live there? I don’t have a set timeline. I do know I’ll save a lot each month—Seattle is expensive—so this move will help me reach goals like traveling more and saving for a future home. I expect to stay at least six months, but it could be longer or shorter; you never know when another opportunity will pop up.

I’m excited for this new adventure and hope you’ll enjoy following along as I transform the space.
