A few years ago I volunteered to host a girls’ night at my home. Everyone was excited to have an evening out without the kids—just friends, snacks and a bit of fun. Since our household has moved on from small children to puppies, I was happy to host so everyone could relax. During the planning stage we made a wish list: chocolate fountain, coffee bar, wine tasting and a chick flick lineup. It all sounded perfect—well, almost perfect.
What ended up making me anxious wasn’t the cleaning, renting a fountain or setting up the coffee bar. It was wine. I keep a wine rack filled with pretty bottles, but I often have no idea what’s inside. I usually buy wine for special occasions or when dining out, and while I enjoy winery visits for the atmosphere, I don’t feel confident picking wines to serve, order or gift. I didn’t want to spend money on something I might not like or risk offering the wrong bottle to friends.

When I learned about a service called Weekly Tasting, at first I thought it wouldn’t be for me. Then it occurred to me: why not learn about wine from home? It could save future embarrassment and help me understand my preferences. Plus, it sounded like a fun activity to share with friends.

How Weekly Tasting works:
Sommeliers choose four wines around a central theme each week. You receive an email describing the theme, and if it interests you, you can order that box for $69.99 with free shipping. Each shipment includes four bottles, tasting cards, suggested recipe pairings and a short tasting video—about 10 minutes—hosted by a professional sommelier.

The sommeliers behind Weekly Tasting are respected industry professionals. Laura Maniec is one of only 32 female Master Sommeliers worldwide. Elizabeth Schneider has over a decade of experience in the wine world and hosts the Wine for Normal People podcast. Their expertise helps make the tasting approachable and informative.

By watching the tasting video and sampling the wines, you learn to identify regions, grape varietals and flavor characteristics, and you begin to understand your personal preferences. Weekly Tasting also offers a label recognition app and a digital cellar where you can save and share your favorite bottles with friends and compare tasting notes.

I’m excited to use Weekly Tasting as a fun option for girls’ night, a date night activity or a book club pairing. It makes wine tasting approachable and gives you something to talk about beyond the usual small talk.
