31-Day Autumn Series: Day 18 — Refrigerator Chalkboard Frame

DIY easy refrigerator chalkboard project

I love having small chalk or dry erase boards around the house to leave notes and encouraging messages for my family. Each season I enjoy writing a cheerful “Happy Fall” or “Merry Christmas” greeting. These little messages seem to make celebrations more special for both the kids and guests.

Recently some readers noticed a chalkboard on my fridge and asked how to make one and attach it. It’s an easy project you can do yourself, and the finished board attaches directly to your refrigerator for convenient, visible notes.

This particular board has been used for seasonal greetings and practical reminders. I also use it to label leftovers or point out snacks and meal options so family members know what’s available. It’s simple and very handy.

How to make a refrigerator chalkboard frame in 4 easy steps

1. Purchase chalkboard adhesive sheets. They come in removable, stick-on formats that work well on frames or directly on flat surfaces.

2. Cut a sheet to fit an old picture frame or a lightweight backing that complements your kitchen decor.

3. Attach the chalkboard sheet to the backing or frame. The adhesive is removable and easy to position while you work.

4. Use removable mounting strips to attach the finished frame to your refrigerator door. Choose strips rated for the weight of your frame so the board stays secure but can still be removed without damaging the surface. Follow the instructions on the mounting strip packaging for best results.

The chalkboard surface itself writes beautifully. I prefer chalkboard pens for cleaner lines and less dust; they’re easy to find at craft stores and produce a crisp, erasable finish.

Now you can leave seasonal greetings, reminders, grocery notes, or snack suggestions right on your refrigerator. It’s a simple update that adds personality and function to your kitchen.

Do you hang things on your refrigerator?

We usually keep our fridge pretty clear—especially since stainless steel doesn’t hold magnets well—but the chalkboard stays in place and is perfect for important reminders. Occasionally I’ll tape up a paper if I want to make absolutely sure it’s seen.
