How to Arrange Flowers

HHello everyone — Michaela here for my monthly entertaining column. I’m always delighted to share fresh, approachable ideas for the home and this month I’m focusing on floral centerpieces.

I’ve loved flowers for as long as I can remember. My mother always kept fresh blooms in our house, and that habit made every room feel warm and welcoming. Through college and into my adult homes, fresh flowers have continued to brighten small spaces like dorms and apartments as well as larger rooms.

With the holidays underway, I put together a seasonal arrangement that served as our Thanksgiving centerpiece and would work beautifully for Christmas too, thanks to its red, green and white tones. Below you’ll find my flower recipe and step-by-step instructions for creating a balanced, natural-looking bouquet. If you prefer a visual guide, there is a video demonstration embedded here for convenience.

Music: Jess Penner, Life is Rosy

Flower Recipe: Peonies, David Austin garden roses, seeded eucalyptus, ranunculus, and berry branches

Step 1: Tape the inside rim of your vessel into sections or quadrants. This simple grid gives each stem a place to sit and helps maintain even spacing, especially useful for round arrangements.

Step 2: Build a foundation with your filler blooms and branches. Line the edges of the vase with eucalyptus or similar branches and place them across several quadrants to form a loose structural base. I like branches that can spill over the sides for a relaxed, organic look.

Step 3: Add your feature flowers next. Place the focal blooms — peonies and garden roses — in different quadrants so they’re evenly distributed. Vary the stem lengths; mix shorter and taller placements to create depth and movement.

Step 4: Fill in gaps with accent flowers and berries. I often use ranunculus to soften spaces around the larger blooms, then tuck in berry branches for texture and seasonal color.

Tip: Rotate the arrangement as you work so it looks good from every angle. Aim for a piece that reads beautifully all the way around rather than having a single obvious front.

One of the best things about arranging flowers is there’s no single “right” way to do it. Small techniques, like taping your vase into sections, make a big difference and can give your arrangement a professional finish without stress. Experiment with proportions, color balance and texture until it feels right to you.

If you’re wondering where to find seasonal peonies or other blooms, check your local flower market. Many cities have markets open to both wholesale and retail customers; they’re often a more affordable source than florists or grocery stores and usually offer a wider selection.

Below are a few photos showing how the centerpiece looks on a holiday table. I find that a well-styled floral arrangement instantly sets a festive, welcoming tone for gatherings.
