Easy DIY Salt Dough Ornaments: Santa Handprint
Looking for a simple and memorable craft to make with kids this holiday season? My daughter Courtney created these charming Santa handprint ornaments with her little boy. They’re an easy keepsake to celebrate his first Christmas and make thoughtful gifts for grandparents and other family members.

How to make them — simple salt dough recipe and steps:
Ingredients:
– 4 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 cup table salt
– 1.5 cups warm water
Instructions: Mix the flour, salt and warm water until a smooth dough forms. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Gently press the child’s hand into the dough to create a clear handprint, then cut around the print to form the ornament shape. Use a straw or similar tool to punch a hole for hanging. Bake on a lined baking sheet at 200–250°F (about 95–120°C) for 2–4 hours, or until the pieces are completely hard and dry through the center. Let cool fully before painting.
Painting and finishing: Use acrylic paint to add Santa details—red for the hat, white for the beard, and flesh tone for the handprint. Allow each paint layer to dry before adding details. A toothpick is perfect for tiny accents; a fine-tip marker can be used for the eyes. When the paint is dry, protect the ornament with a clear sealant such as a spray sealer or a water-based sealer like Mod Podge. Thread baker’s twine or ribbon through the hole and tie to hang on the tree.
These ornaments are quick, budget-friendly, and full of sentimental value. They’re ideal for making with toddlers and preschoolers with an adult’s help for the pressing and baking steps. Store them in a cool, dry place between seasons to keep them looking fresh year after year.
