5 Cozy Ways to Add Hygge to Your Home

I’m going to say it: I’m 100% ready for fall. October is here, the furnace came on today, and I’m wearing a sweater and cozy socks because I’m always cold — even when the sun is out. That chilly feeling makes me crave all the Hygge comforts.

I love the Hygge mindset: embracing the warmth and comfort of being inside. Whether Seattle’s weather cooperates or not, October is when I fully lean into creating cozy, inviting spaces at home.

Here are five simple ways to bring Hygge coziness into your home. I hope these ideas inspire a little fall nesting this week!

Warm knit blankets

Nothing says cozy like a thick knit blanket. Our goldendoodle Jack already knows the best spot — and that’s where you’ll find me all fall and winter too. A chunky knit throw layered over a sofa or favorite chair instantly creates a snug, inviting spot to curl up.

Mood lighting

Good lighting transforms a room. Lately I’ve noticed designer rooms photographed without lamps — but for cozy evenings, ambient lighting is essential. Lamps, sconces, and dimmed overhead fixtures add warmth and a relaxed atmosphere.

Every evening I turn on table and floor lamps around the house and lower the dining chandelier. The soft glow makes spaces feel lived-in and calm, perfect for reading, conversation, or simply unwinding.

Cozy corners

Creating a cozy corner is an easy, rewarding project. You don’t have to tackle an entire room — pick a small nook and make it inviting. A dedicated spot for reading or sipping tea makes hygge feel immediate and achievable.

Choose a comfortable chair, add a soft throw and a cushion, place a lamp nearby, and include a basket for books, journals, or a favorite hobby. Even a tiny corner by the fireplace or a quiet window can become your go-to retreat.

Comfy slippers

When temperatures drop, slippers are a must. Plush, supportive slippers make wandering around the house feel like a little everyday luxury. Look for styles with a soft lining and a sturdy sole so they’re comfortable for morning routines and evening relaxation alike.

Flickering candles

Flickering candlelight is one of the most comforting elements of a cozy home. If you prefer not to burn real candles, battery-operated wax candles with moving wicks offer the same warm glow and are easy to use with timers.

For scent, consider diffusers with non-toxic essential oil blends to set a mood without smoke. A soft, warm scent combined with gentle light creates a relaxing atmosphere perfect for evenings at home.

PS — I just returned from a trip to Salt Lake City, and this week marks the start of our empty-nest season. I’ll share updates soon. Thank you for reading and for joining me as I settle into these cozier months.
