Ever pictured yourself hosting an outdoor movie night in your backyard? After seeing this stunning outdoor room, I can’t stop imagining how to recreate it on my deck. An outdoor movie party would be so much fun — cozy seating, a simple screen and a table stocked with popcorn and drinks make a perfect summer evening.
Where did I find this outdoor movie-theater inspiration?
Last week I was in New York City with my husband for a rare getaway. Part of the trip was an invitation from Lowe’s Home Improvement to attend an event showcasing three outdoor rooms designed by talented creatives. The event supported charity, which made it even more special.
The party took place in an incredible SoHo loft with an unforgettable balcony view of the city. We enjoyed drinks and hors d’oeuvres while chatting with designers and guests and admiring the three distinct outdoor room designs. It felt luxurious and inspiring — exactly the kind of event that sparks new ideas for home projects.

Danny Seo’s outdoor movie setup stood out to me. He used a simple drop cloth as a screen and arranged comfortable seating nearby, creating an intimate theater experience. The concept is easy to replicate at home and perfect for casual summer gatherings: add blankets, pillows and a nearby table for snacks and drinks and you’re set.
If movies aren’t your thing, imagine dining under the stars in an outdoor dining room. Marcela Valladolid’s design featured lush plants, vibrant flowers, artwork and star-shaped string lights above a well-dressed table. It felt inviting and festive — an ideal setting for an evening meal with friends.

One memorable element in Marcela’s space was a living succulent wall. It served as a striking focal point and added texture and color to the dining area. Small, unexpected details like this can transform an outdoor space into a distinct and memorable room.
This could be a lovely outdoor room for entertaining all summer.
Designer Elaine Griffin’s outdoor sitting room was another favorite. Layered color, texture and pattern created a warm, lived-in feel that’s both stylish and comfortable.
Her choices of patterned pillows, layered rugs and varied furnishings made the space feel like a true outdoor living room. She also used painted ceiling medallions on trellises to create a unique overhead element — a clever, budget-friendly way to add personality and color.
I also loved the outdoor lamps — yes, they were rated for outdoor use. Good lighting changes the whole mood of an outdoor room and adds a cozy, inviting ambiance in the evening.
I plan to layer rugs on my own decks this summer. I already use durable neutral rugs that hide dirt well for Seattle’s muddy climate, but adding a colorful layer will instantly brighten the space and make it feel more intentional.
Choosing a favorite among the three outdoor rooms is tough — each one offers different ideas worth trying. If you’re ready for summer projects, Lowe’s Creative Ideas magazine and website are full of practical inspiration for transforming outdoor spaces.
So, which is your favorite outdoor room?
The designers need votes — the winning designer receives a $50,000 donation for their chosen charity. If you’d like to support one of the designs, look for the voting page on Lowe’s select channels.
Thank you to Lowe’s and their team for inviting me to this special event in New York City. I enjoyed the evening and appreciated the chance to see such imaginative outdoor room designs firsthand. A portion of my trip was provided by Lowe’s.
