Conservatory Design Ideas Inspired by Nature

In our English Tudor in Portland, we added a corner to the kitchen that felt like a conservatory or garden room. I loved how much light poured in through the windows and how the space felt connected to the outdoors.

Below are a couple of photos of that conservatory-like kitchen space (we called it “The Castle” on Love the Home You Have). These are older screen captures from a video made when my house was for sale in 2007, so the image quality isn’t great, but they show the idea.

And this one, below, from my conservatory-like kitchen (see more of my old house here):

A conservatory is traditionally a room with glass walls and a roof attached to a house, used as a greenhouse or sun parlor. Even if you don’t have a formal conservatory, a room filled with large windows and skylights can bring the same bright, airy feeling and transform everyday living spaces.

Long before our Tudor, I dreamed of an English-style conservatory. In our first small house I even contacted a company about building a tiny conservatory, but we moved instead. It’s still a hope for the future — the idea of a light-filled space with plants and comfortable seating is timeless.

Some conservatories are simply breathtaking — you can imagine lingering over meals in a dining room that opens to light and views of the garden.

One image in particular makes my heart leap: a conservatory that opens onto a garden framed with white fencing. The combination of glass, greenery and classic fencing feels both peaceful and romantic.

Another favorite is a conservatory tucked on the back of a farmhouse. The way these spaces blend indoor comfort with outdoor views makes them perfect for reading, entertaining, or simply enjoying a cup of tea.
