Inspiration: Wood Plank Walls
From high-end homes to DIY projects and design blogs, wood plank walls are a prominent trend in home décor right now. I’ve always loved wood on walls — previous homes of mine featured charming old paneling and board-and-batten that I still miss. I’m not chasing a trend; I simply appreciate the timeless, classic look wood brings to a house. Fortunately, many trends become tomorrow’s classics.

Wood planks on a wall can instantly give a newer house a cozy, cottage-like character. I have several rooms I’d like to update with planked walls in the months ahead, so I’ve collected inspirational photos to help decide styles and finishes. I thought you might enjoy this visual roundup as well.
Below are examples of horizontal plank walls in a variety of spaces. While this selection emphasizes horizontal installation, wood can be used vertically, diagonally, or in mixed patterns depending on your taste and the room’s architecture.

Plank walls work beautifully in stairways and transitional spaces, adding warmth and visual interest where plain drywall might feel flat.

Horizontal planks paired with details like barn doors or simple trim create a relaxed, lived-in feeling that suits farmhouse, coastal, and cottage styles alike.

A painted or whitewashed finish can brighten a space while preserving the texture and character of the wood.

Even subtle plank detailing can make a room feel more intentional and finished.

If white isn’t your preference, consider color. Painted planks in soft or bold hues can transform the mood of a room while keeping texture at the forefront.
Natural wood planks offer rich grain and warmth that work beautifully in coastal or rustic settings. Mixing finishes and styles of paneling throughout a home can create a layered, collected look rather than feeling mismatched.
