A master bedroom should be a retreat — a place that invites rest and calm at the end of the day. When we moved in, our bedroom felt ordinary and uninspiring. After a few thoughtful updates, it has become a cozy, serene sanctuary.

Below I’ll share the changes that made the biggest difference: simple design choices, layered textures, and a few carefully chosen accessories. Many of the pieces we used came from World Market, which made it easy to pull everything together. Read on for tips and inspiration you can apply in your own room.

Create a Cozy Color Scheme
Start with a calm, neutral palette to turn an ordinary bedroom into a relaxing oasis. Neutrals provide a soothing backdrop that makes it easier to rest and recharge.
We chose a deep, matte gray-plum for the walls. The dark tone adds drama while still feeling warm and enveloping, helping the room read as intimate and restful.

Play Up the Details
Small details make a big difference. Layering different textures and finishes gives bedding depth and personality. We added a pom-pom quilt and mixed macramé and velvet pillows to create a tactile, inviting bed.

Design a Relaxing Mood
Set a tranquil mood with spa-inspired accents: soft lighting, natural materials, and minimal clutter. Candles—real or battery-operated—are an easy way to add warmth without overwhelming the room. Rattan and woven accessories introduce an organic, calming texture.

Treat Yourself Like a Guest
Create a guest-worthy experience for yourself every night. Keep the space tidy, use fresh bedding, and choose comfortable pillows. Little luxuries like a pretty teapot and a favorite mug make winding down feel intentional and special.
