Welcome to this three-part mini-series (part of My Year of Dwelling Well!) called How to Find Joy at Home (a simple guide).
“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” – Annie Dillard
DDo you make the small moments in your life matter?
Do you shape your daily routines with intention, finding simple ways to elevate the ordinary parts of the day?
The choices we make each day and the atmosphere we create at home add up to the life we live.
In the past few days on The Inspired Room we explored a three-day mini-series about finding joy at home. We covered creating a happy morning routine, setting daily intentions, and in this post, designing a calming wind-down ritual. These are small practices that have consistently brought me peace and joy in my own home.
I’ve heard from many readers who are already feeling inspired and hopeful. I’m grateful for your messages—they encourage me. Many kind people have shared how they want to care for their homes and families with more attentiveness. Life isn’t always simple or perfect, but small, thoughtful actions can help us care better for ourselves and those around us.
Creating a home—and the life within it—is an art.

Do you have a wind-down routine you look forward to at the end of the day?
Here are ten simple steps to include in your nightly wind-down ritual.
Evenings are often busy with tasks like preparing dinner, clearing up, or putting children to bed. Some seasons feel chaotic, but a deliberately designed wind-down ritual supports your well-being.
A wind-down routine slows you down through predictable, comforting tasks you can anticipate each night. Depending on the season, I might begin this ritual just before or after dinner. A few repeated actions will cue your brain that it’s time to rest and create a more peaceful ending to your day.
- Put away your phone to reduce distractions and allow your mind to settle.
- Pull the blinds to create a sense of privacy and enclosure.
- Dim the lights to soften the atmosphere and prepare your body for rest.
- Turn on small lamps for cozy, layered lighting.
- Switch on battery-operated candles to add a warm, calm glow.
- Fill your diffuser with a relaxing essential oil blend for a gentle, soothing scent.
- Play calming wind-down music to shift your mood and slow your thoughts.
- Write in a journal—reflect with gratitude on the day, note a few moments you want to remember, or use a guided page to capture what nourished you.
- Turn down the covers and mist your sheets with a light linen spray to make your bed inviting.
- Savor a slow, relaxing activity: take a warm bath, brew a cup of tea, or read—choose at least one small thing that is just for you.
Set a gentle, familiar rhythm for your evenings so they become restful and comforting.
I hope this mini-series encourages you to shape days that bring more joy into your life and home.
What does your nightly ritual look like? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.

I often include essential oils in my daily routines because they add calm and support to home life. Pure plant essential oils can uplift a morning, support sleep, ease emotions, and create a naturally pleasant-smelling home without harsh synthetic fragrances.
People use essential oils for many everyday needs: improving sleep, soothing skin, supporting digestion, enhancing focus, aiding cleaning, and providing immune or emotional support. When used thoughtfully, they contribute to a happier, healthier home environment.
