2012 Trend Report via Kate at Centsational Girl
Hey y’all — how are you? My friend Kate shared a post about 2012 fall fashion after visiting New York, and it reminded me how often home decor echoes the fashion world. When a color or combination becomes popular in clothing, you’ll frequently see that palette translated into interiors and accessories.
I’m not someone who chases trends, but I find it fascinating to notice the connections between style and interiors. It’s fun to watch which fashion tendencies trickle into our homes and how people adapt them in creative ways.
Kate created a collage highlighting color combinations and looks she saw throughout the city. She’s a great trend spotter, so I checked out her roundup to see what’s on the scene. One striking theme she noticed was electric blue.
Here’s how she described it:
Electric Blue. Wow — this color appeared in a huge percentage of the stores. I was surprised by how much electric or royal blue showed up in both men’s and women’s fashion, often paired with black. It’s a vivid, saturated take on cobalt and seems to be everywhere.
That immediately made me think of my own vivid blue office walls paired with a black desk.

If decor follows fashion, then I apparently landed on this trend by accident. I painted my office Rich Navy by Glidden because I loved how it worked with my curtains, not to be fashionable. The black Pottery Barn desk was there simply because it was what I already owned — a practical move that ended up fitting the look perfectly.

I didn’t set out to create a trendy space; I was just experimenting with a bold color. It’s funny when something you choose for personal reasons aligns with a larger trend — you start to wonder if you were ahead of the curve without realizing it.
Now I’m tempted to dig through my closet for that blue-and-black dress I used to wear — the one with removable shoulder pads. Fashion cycles do come back around, though I’m not sure shoulder pads need a comeback.
Or maybe shoulder pads should remain in the past.
What do you think?
