How to Decorate with Accessories

I prefer to decorate using what I already own. Many pieces of my furniture and accessories have been with me for years. From time to time I refresh a vignette or add a single new piece, but mostly I rely on what I have and rearrange it to feel fresh.

Because my life is busy and full of other priorities, I keep decorating simple and manageable. I avoid fussy projects and big expenses. Over the years I’ve developed a handful of practical tricks and little formulas that help me combine items I already own into cohesive, attractive arrangements.

My favorite decorating tips are straightforward. You don’t have to buy lots of new things or master complicated DIY projects. Chances are good you already have the essentials needed to create a polished, comfortable home.

For a deeper dive into my approach, I’ve put together a How to Decorate series with practical tips and inspiration that lay out my process and favorite ideas.

Recently I contributed a post to The Stories of A to Z where I share three simple tips for staging accessories, along with a few extra ideas. These suggestions work well in any home, including rental spaces—no construction or heavy changes required.

Beth invited a number of home decor bloggers to take part in a Decorating for the DIY’er series, and I was pleased to contribute. The series is full of useful, approachable advice from people who rely on common-sense solutions to make a home look and feel put together.

If you want more practical decorating guidance, be sure to explore the collection of posts in my How to Decorate series. They bring together many of the tips and methods I use to create a home that’s both attractive and livable.
