It is almost time for holiday parties!
I’ve always loved hosting. Inviting friends and family over is one of the best motivators to get my home organized and ready. A party on the calendar sharpens my focus and makes it easy to prioritize the tasks that transform a house into a welcoming space.
Whether I’m planning a large gathering or an intimate get-together, I follow the same simple routine. A warm, inviting atmosphere sets the tone and lets me relax so I can enjoy my guests.
Top Ten Things to Do Before a Party:
- Sweep the front walk and porch. A tidy entry is the first impression guests have of your home. Place a clean doormat outside so visitors can wipe their feet.
- Turn on outdoor lights. Exterior lighting makes guests feel welcomed and safe. If you want a charming touch, line the path with simple lanterns or jars filled with a little salt and a votive—just enough to cast a soft glow along the walkway.
- Pay attention to the entryway. The foyer sets expectations. Remove clutter and shoes, lay out a fresh mat inside, and make space in a closet or bedroom for coats. Light a candle in the afternoon, then blow it out to let the wax set; relight it shortly before guests arrive so the scent fills the space without the wick drowning in melted wax.
- Prepare a clean, inviting powder room. Stock extra hand towels and toilet paper, empty the wastebasket, and have a pleasant-smelling candle ready to light. Make sure any flame is placed safely out of reach of children and away from flammable items.
- Choose soft background music. Music adds atmosphere without overpowering conversation. Instrumental or light upbeat playlists work best—lively enough to keep energy up but quiet enough to let people talk easily.
- Provide plenty of seating and surfaces. Pull out extra chairs, ottomans or stools to create comfortable conversation areas. Make sure guests have places to set drinks and small plates. Bowls of nuts or light snacks help guests settle in before the main serving.
- Turn off the TV. A television pulls attention away from conversation. Turn it off so guests focus on each other and the atmosphere you’ve created.
- Light matters—avoid dark corners. A poorly lit home can feel cold or gloomy. You can brighten the space by turning on all the lights, or create a cozy mood with lamps, candles, and dimmers. Aim for an even, welcoming glow throughout the rooms guests will use.
- Have beverages ready as guests arrive. Offer a pitcher of ice water and a festive opener like hot spiced cider or a warm seasonal drink that makes the house smell inviting. Preparing a signature beverage ahead of time ensures guests feel welcomed the moment they step inside.
- Take a deep breath, relax, and smile. Greet your guests warmly. Your calm and friendly presence sets the tone for a comfortable, enjoyable gathering.
