Cozy Sweater-Season Home Tips for Warmth and Comfort

We’ve been enjoying bright autumn sun and cooler temperatures here in Seattle—sweater weather at its best. Outside, leaves are turning brilliant shades of orange and yellow and some are beginning to drift to the ground. There’s a crispness in the air, and I’m savoring every minute of fall nesting as I make the house feel warm and cozy.

For years I’ve loved letting the seasons evolve slowly inside my home to mirror the gradual changes outdoors. Even when the weather is unpredictable, a gentle shift toward fall—bringing in texture, warmth, and layered comforts—feels like a soothing nesting ritual.

Sweater weather isn’t just about adding an extra layer to wear; it’s an invitation to change how the home feels. As the air turns cooler, I naturally want to bring more warmth inside—through textiles, light, and small swaps that make a big difference.

Sackcloth & Ashes Blanket

Blankets are one of my favorite fall accessories. My daughter Courtney and I recently stopped into World Market and fell for the eco-friendly blankets from Sackcloth & Ashes—so cozy! I brought home a new blanket and discovered that when you buy one at World Market, a second blanket is provided to a shelter in California. I love that these blankets share warmth with others.

The Sackcloth & Ashes blanket also comes in a box designed to be filled with items to donate to a shelter, or to keep in your car to share with someone in need. I’ll include ideas for what to put in that box at the end of this post.

Along with cozy blankets and warm sweaters, I crave the glow of evening light this season. With days getting darker earlier, I’m turning on lights before dinner and layering mood lighting throughout the house. Sparkly accents—copper string lights, mercury glass votives, and battery-operated candles in lanterns—add a gentle shimmer that complements the soft textures of fall.

My parents and nephew visited over the weekend, and Saturday night we set the table and enjoyed homemade soup. An inviting table, the laughter of family, and the aroma of a warm meal are perfect ways to bring comfort to a chilly evening.

Battery-operated copper-wire string lights tuck into shelves, around mantels, or inside lanterns, adding a little magic wherever you place them. Even a single strand brings a soft, uplifting glow that carries through the holidays.

White Fringe Pillow / Lumbar Pillow

Swapping a few pillows or pillow covers is an easy seasonal update. Neutral shades—black, white, and warm neutrals—with lots of texture are versatile for fall and winter. Using neutrals as a base makes it simple to add pops of color when you want brightness or floral accents.

Replacing smooth, shiny objects with warmer, rougher textures can also shift the room’s feel. I swapped a glossy white planter on the mantel for a chunky wood one—the change was small but instantly made the space feel cozier. Brass lanterns and a few well-chosen accessories add character and a welcoming warmth to any room.

I’ve made a few other small changes around the house, but I’ll share those another day. I prefer slow, thoughtful seasonal transitions—they let the home evolve naturally into fall.
