Do you ever freeze up when it’s time to hang something on the wall? Or feel stuck in a creative rut and want to try something new?
Not long ago I came across a pretty embroidered rug that immediately caught my eye. I loved its texture and pattern, and I could see it working beautifully as a wall hanging instead of on the floor.
Here’s the problem: I tend to overthink. I get indecisive and procrastinate. I’ll delay hanging anything until I’ve considered every option and am absolutely sure it’s the right choice.

A hard deadline has always been my best motivator to act quickly and accept imperfection—for example, when friends are coming over for dinner. Without that push, it’s easy to keep putting things off.
Remember when I hung my plate wall? Yep, people were on their way over for dinner.
Right now, with Seattle in the middle of a snowy stretch and more snow on the way, there’s no party to force my hand. Still, I wanted to try the rug on the wall even though I had a dozen doubts.
Would I like it on the wall? Where would I hang it? I didn’t have a proper rod or velcro. If I placed it here, I might need a new table or a bench beneath it. My long-term plan for that corner is a built-in bookcase, so why do anything temporary that might not be exactly right?
See what happens in my head?
Too many thoughts. Too many decisions.
Then I asked myself one more question—what’s the worst that could happen if I just put it up?
Maybe I wouldn’t like it. I could always take it down. Yes, there would be a couple of nail holes, but my husband offered to patch them. Or maybe I would like it. Maybe others wouldn’t. Maybe someone would judge me for hanging a rug on a wall. But could I live with that?
Once I weighed the real risks, hanging it suddenly didn’t seem like such a big deal. Two seconds later, the rug was on the wall.

Does it spark joy?
I’m not sure yet. It might come down tomorrow—or I might keep it up. Sometimes I need time with a change to know how I truly feel about it. Living with something for a while lets you see how it fits with the rest of the room and whether it enhances the space.
First impressions and other people’s opinions don’t always determine what’s right for your home. It’s perfectly okay to try something new, even if you’re not confident it will work. Some risks pay off, some don’t, and you won’t know until you try.
Giving myself permission to act—to get things done and move on—often brings its own kind of joy. You don’t always need perfection; sometimes momentum is enough.
Are you an indecisive decorator?
