Welcome — I’m so glad you’re here for coffee, even if it’s just virtually. A couple of weeks ago my daughter Courtney was visiting and I made vanilla bourbon coffees for us. They were delightfully cozy, the kind of cup you might imagine having at a restaurant after dinner. For me it was a morning treat, and the best part is you don’t need actual bourbon to get that warm, vanilla-kissed flavor. It’s simple to make, and I’ll share how below.

These days I brew almost all my coffee at home. It saves money and, in my opinion, tastes better too. I order whole beans, grind them fresh in my grinder every day or every couple of days, and brew them in a stovetop espresso maker. Freshly ground beans and a simple brew method give a rich, full flavor that’s perfect for adding a touch of milk or flavoring.

Once brewed, you can enjoy the coffee black or customize it however you like. I usually foam a little oat milk to make my cup creamier — a small foamer or steamer works well for that. I don’t drink dairy or almond milk, but use the milk you prefer. I’ve been meaning to try making homemade oat milk and will report back when I do.

I usually stick to oat milk as my only addition, but occasionally I like to mix things up and treat myself. A small flavor change can make your morning coffee feel special, like you’re at a cozy café. Vanilla Bourbon Coffee is one of my favorite easy upgrades — it adds a warm, slightly boozy vanilla note without using alcohol. Here’s my simple approach.

Ready?

This is what I add to turn my coffee into a Vanilla Bourbon Latte.

I use a vanilla bourbon-flavored extract and add just a splash to taste. If you like sweeter coffee, add a little honey or sweetener. Foam your preferred milk and pour it over the brewed coffee, then stir in the extract. Start with a small amount, taste, and adjust until it suits you.

If you have a quiet morning, try making this and sip it while you catch up on a blog or read a new post. Back when blogging was at its peak, many of us paired our morning coffee with reading online posts — a simple, comforting ritual. I hope you still find time for small routines like that.

Happy nesting!
